Lively and danceable R&B, in the vein of James Brown. Jones' and his musicians, especially the horn section, would be ideal as a house band for a late-night talk show host. Exceptions are "Long, Long Way to Go," a solo acoustic giving a back porch feeling, and a slow sobber, "I Broke My Baby's Heart." The ending tune, Sleepy John Estes' "Drop Down Mama," is a treat with Jones on guitar accompanied by drummer Reinhardt Melz. ~ Char Ham

In 1995 Lloyd Jones recorded a highly acclaimed album for the Audioquest label, entitled "Trouble Monkey". Live to two tracks! No overdubbing, no going back to fix anything. Blues Revue named it, "Not only one of the best albums of 1995, it is one of the best albums of the 1990's, while Robert Cray called it "the best damn record I've heard in a long time!" Vintage Guitar Magazine said "Jones offers vocals that would make Sam and Dave smile and guitar work Steve Cropper would be proud of" and referred to his affecting vocals as "gritty as a dirt road and smooth as melting butter." Lloyds songwriting was starting to be noticed as well, with Joe Louis Walker and Gatemouth Brown covering two of his compositions. Jones still plays a lot of these songs in his live show today.

Wild rhythm and blues, saxophone riffs, and a smoking guitar. Made up by Paris-area musicians and masterfully directed by Welsh saxophonist and singer Drew Davies, the Drew Davies & Rhythm Combo presents a contagiously cheerful show that is also a tribute to the great Louis Jordan on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Jordan was a famous singer, saxophone player, composer, and bandleader who in the 1950s and 1960s—before the advent of rock 'n' roll—made a whole generation dance to his explosive mix of swing, blues, and boogie-woogie.

David Vest is a natural-born house-wrecker, and it won't take him ten seconds to grab listeners with Rock A While, his first solo release in five years. The new CD features ten Vest originals, plus seldom-covered songs by John Lee Hooker, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent and Willie Dixon. After the opening rocker, Blind Mule heads straight into some of the deepest (and darkest) country blues to be heard, based on a story too wild and improbable to be anything but true. This stuff came from life, not books, just as David learned how to write songs like Magic City Shuffle not by listening to recordings but by playing with Big Joe Turner in his prime. The heart of the album may be the three live tracks from what one writer called 'the performance of the year,' at the Waterfront Blues Festival. 'I'm the last of my kind,' says David, and he's got a point. From the back of a flatbed truck in Alabama, tonight clubs and festival stages around the world, this man has been rockin' and shoutin' the blues since 1957.
