Randy Casey's 8th album, t Got Lucky, was inspired by a guitar that Casey beat out Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick to get. ln fact, Casey was getting it back; the 1969 Gibson Les Paul Custom was the first guitar Casey had ever played as a kid. When decades later, the neighbor who had let him play the guitar back then got an offer from Neilsen to buy it, he offered it to Casey first. Casey dug deep, and the neighbor let him make payments, but at last, his first love was his. immediately, songs began to flow from the guitar, Casey said. lt's that guitar that produces the swampy slide of "Bed Bug Blues," "Broken Arm Blues," and "That Train," the Stonesy rock of "One Step Ahead," and the moody overdrive of "Strange."

Casey is a consummate guitarist; as Shannon Curfman's first music director, he has played the largest of stages with the biggest of stars. He's also gotten his instrumental work placed on NPR's "AllThings Considered" and other national shows. I Got Lucky reveals Casey's other prodigious talents as well, including creative and clever songwriting that captures the essence of classic blues while contributing tasteful innoyations to the genre. The result is a collection of songs that is at once impressively eclectic and firmly rooted in tradition.

Drive My Blues Away is the brand new album from Juno Award (Canada's Grammy) winner Morgan Davis. Morgan has been on the road in the U. S. Sometimes it's all about the blues.

So it was with Terry Frank's music. So it was with the news of his death.

Frank and his bands brought the blues to Summerfest and other local venues for decades. His forte was slide guitar and the Delta blues.

"He was one of the mainstays as far as being a player in Milwaukee," said Tom Crawford, station manager at WMSE-FM (91.7), which features live performances and the "Blues Drive" in weekday afternoon drive time.

"He was one of the people who kept the blues going here," Crawford said. "You mention the blues in Milwaukee, and you have to bring up Terry's name."

Frank died in his sleep Jan. 25 in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he moved with his wife, Cheryl, in August. He was 52. No cause of death is known, but he was on medication for high blood pressure, his wife said.

In town for the holidays, Frank played with friends at Liquid Johnny's.

He grew up in Wauwatosa, learning to play the guitar as a teenager and becoming fascinated with the blues.

"He started playing with a cast of characters, and they used to have practice at the warehouse of the family business," paper distributor A.D. Schinner Co., Cheryl said.

By the late 1970s, his Black Cat Bone band was tapping the rock-blues vein and drawing crowds to live music clubs such as Murray Tap, Century Hall and Stockholders.

"Back then, we pretty much stuck to playing straight-ahead, big-city blues," Frank recalled in 1999. "Albert and Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters - all the electric-blues masters."

That started changing in the 1980s.

"Customers started wanting more of the blues-rock stuff - the Stones, the Allman Brothers, Thorogood; younger crowds began thinking of those guys as ancient classics," Frank said. "So we began mixing a lot of rock covers in but remained pretty much a blues band."

The band morphed into Terry Frank and Bone Deluxe. Frank did solo gigs, too.

"I like the acoustic shows because I get to do an earthier, more rootsy exploration of the blues," Frank said in another interview. "Shows with the band are more of a rocking, weekend-relief kind of thing. I think the more intellectual blues fans like the acoustic shows because they deal with the authentic aspects of the music."

"He was always true to the blues," said bass player Rick Holmes, who sometimes performed with Bone Deluxe. "He was a blues player, and he was proud of it."

Family responsibilities and his day job - sales rep and vice president at the family paper firm - kept Frank based in Milwaukee, but he earned a wider reputation with his recordings, especially "Blues in the Night" and "Devil by Her Side."

"He could do it all," including writing and singing lead vocals, Crawford said. "He was more known for his band, but he could sit down and entertain a crowd on his National steel guitar, playing the original Delta blues."

Frank was a key supporter of the blues on WMSE, including at special events at the Up & Under Pub.

"Terry would get all the great blues players in Milwaukee into the same room," Crawford said. "They helped us raise thousands of dollars."

Frank taught his wife to play the bass. She played with Bone Deluxe until child-care arrangements got too complicated when both were out on gigs.

"I met Terry when I was 17 years old," Cheryl said. "And we got married pretty quick, about a year and a half later. And it's worked ever since."

"The only hard rules I've learned about having a family and being a musician is that you have to deal with one crisis at a time," Frank said good-naturedly. "And you have to have a real love for music."

Lively and danceable R&B, in the vein of James Brown. Jones' and his musicians, especially the horn section, would be ideal as a house band for a late-night talk show host. Exceptions are "Long, Long Way to Go," a solo acoustic giving a back porch feeling, and a slow sobber, "I Broke My Baby's Heart." The ending tune, Sleepy John Estes' "Drop Down Mama," is a treat with Jones on guitar accompanied by drummer Reinhardt Melz. ~ Char Ham

In 1995 Lloyd Jones recorded a highly acclaimed album for the Audioquest label, entitled "Trouble Monkey". Live to two tracks! No overdubbing, no going back to fix anything. Blues Revue named it, "Not only one of the best albums of 1995, it is one of the best albums of the 1990's, while Robert Cray called it "the best damn record I've heard in a long time!" Vintage Guitar Magazine said "Jones offers vocals that would make Sam and Dave smile and guitar work Steve Cropper would be proud of" and referred to his affecting vocals as "gritty as a dirt road and smooth as melting butter." Lloyds songwriting was starting to be noticed as well, with Joe Louis Walker and Gatemouth Brown covering two of his compositions. Jones still plays a lot of these songs in his live show today.

British pop-jazz-blues crooner Elkie Brooks (born Elaine Bookbinder) dominated U.K. radio in the late '70s with a series of hit singles that established her as "the biggest-selling female album artist in the history of the British pop charts." The Manchester native, who grew up in an extremely musical family, left school at the age of 15 to join a dance band in London. She eventually mad the jump to radio, as well as numerous appearances with legendary jazz bandleader Humphrey Lyttelton, before embarking on a career in pop music. The early '60s saw the budding young singer releasing singles for Decca and EMI, as well as opening for everyone from Carl Perkins to the Beatles, but commercial success remained elusive. She joined the blues-rock band Dada in 1970, which would eventually find success through a name change (Vinegar Joe) and the arrival of a new vocalist, Robert Palmer. The popular group released three beloved records before disbanding in 1974, and after a brief stint with U.S. Southern rock band Wet Willie, Brooks decided to take another crack at a solo career. 3 x 1 = .... ONE? Now that sounds like a wrong calculation in a mathematical sense, but transfered to this new musical project coming from three astounding Canadian guitarists and vocalists it does seem to make sense artistically. And thats because the music to be discovered on TRI-CONTINENTAL melts three highly individual voices into one collective and wonderful new voice: a new voice that almost effortlessly combines musical styles of different origin with an attitude of dedication and playfulness. With this collective spirit, TRI-CONTINENTAL ties up to other successful blues/folk/worldmusic fusions of recent times, especially since the music on the album is fueled by a spirit of mutual friendship and respect. Its the same kind of spirit that seems to be present on many of Ry Cooders recent collaborations and its a cornerstone of this record as well.

TRI-CONTINENTAL is nothing less than a triple word-play, first of all. On the musical geography level, the three players Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau and Madagascar Slim (a.k.a. Ben Randriamananjara) each accentuate different styles from different musical continents: While Ben Bourne likes to draw on his Celtic and folk influences, Lester Quitzau is first and foremost a remarkably open-minded bluesman. Last but not least, Madagascar Slim combines the musical traditions of his African homeland with blues-inspired playing of a truly individual nature. Level no. 2 might even refer to "Continental" as a brand name for resonator guitars but it certainly refers to the "Tri-Cone" metal horns used for creating the one-of-a-kind sound of resonator guitars. Instruments that have always occupied a central place in many bluesmens consciousness from Blind Lemon Jefferson to Taj Mahal. The quite attractive but more profane level no. 3 points us to the somewhat stylish vehicle to be found on the cover of this album. Its Bill Bournes favorite car his 68 Lincoln Continental...

So what does TRI-CONTINENTAL sound like?

Anyone familiar with recent work by artists like Chris Whitley or Eric Bibb will appreciate the intense vibe on this album. Despite all the stylistic diversification, its a musical mosaic of great intensity and immense consistency recorded live in the studio. These guys are curious and know how to listen, they communicate and project a sense of emotional directness on each of the albums eleven tracks. There is 12-bar-forms in the disguise of country spirituals, tasteful fingerstyle and slide work on every corner and folk blues gems à la Mississippi John Hurt are being brought into the present. Tight and atmospheric percussion patterns are used to embellish the fascinating complexity of Malagassy rhythms. The vocal arrangements are concise and to the point. There is hypnotising improvisation next to inventive guitar arrangements and the music creates a very soulful and spiritual atmosphere. Its the creation of a new collective voice out of three individual ones that can be witnessed here. Its a process thats a joy to hear.

Still Bad demonstrated that at 54, Denise LaSalle was still very much on top of her game. As its title indicates, the veteran soul and blues singer hadn't mellowed with age--those who love to hear LaSalle taking a sassy, in-your-face approach won't be disappointed by trash-talking numbers like "1-900-GET-SOME," "Right Side of the Wrong Bed" or "The Bitch Is Bad." But true to form, LaSalle has no problem turning around and showing a more sensitive side of herself on "Child of the Ghetto," an inspiring, poignant ballad describing a poor woman's determination to improve her life. LaSalle's Malaco output of the 1980s and 1990s was quite consistent, and with Still Bad, the singer once again excels by sticking with what she does best.

Since the release of her 2009 debut EP entitled - Carolyn Fe 100% - this Montreal Blueswoman has been working very hard gigging and gathering up a loyal following. While all this was happening, the past year was spent writing up the new material contained in this full-length CD entitled "Original Sin", and to top it off the band evolved and a name change had to happen, so here it is! Say "Hello" to The Carolyn Fe Blues Collective! The name change better reflects the collaborative efforts between Carolyn Fe and her band mates. As well, the band will have the opportunity of inviting guest artists to play along with them as they promote their new CD, Original Sin.

This album finds Carolyn Fe in her true element as she performs original material that depict the darker shade of the Blues from “Broken String” to “Rant” all the way to the title track, “Original Sin”. This album marks a homecoming for Carolyn Fe and the members of the band. David Vest is a natural-born house-wrecker, and it won't take him ten seconds to grab listeners with Rock A While, his first solo release in five years. The new CD features ten Vest originals, plus seldom-covered songs by John Lee Hooker, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent and Willie Dixon. After the opening rocker, Blind Mule heads straight into some of the deepest (and darkest) country blues to be heard, based on a story too wild and improbable to be anything but true. This stuff came from life, not books, just as David learned how to write songs like Magic City Shuffle not by listening to recordings but by playing with Big Joe Turner in his prime. The heart of the album may be the three live tracks from what one writer called 'the performance of the year,' at the Waterfront Blues Festival. 'I'm the last of my kind,' says David, and he's got a point. From the back of a flatbed truck in Alabama, tonight clubs and festival stages around the world, this man has been rockin' and shoutin' the blues since 1957.

Mr. Keller is backed by The Revelations, an R&B band that usually backs up soul singer Tre' Williams. It is Mr. Williams who shares vocals on 'The Things We have To Do' a soulful countdown of the these things we have to do in life.

Mr. Keller's voice has a depth and soul to it that has to make him one of the most talented unsigned artists around. His guitar playing has the edge and grit to it that fits right in with the sound and landscape. His version of 'Pouring Water On A Drowning Man' recalls an early Van Morrison meets Otis Redding. "Big James" got his first taste of the blues when as a young teenager he would stand outside of a club on the southside of Chicago and listen to B.B. "Big Voice" Odum sing with Billy Branch and the Sons of Blues. Eventually, he was allowed to sit in with the band and as the old saying goes, "The rest is history."

At nineteen years old he joined the legendary "Little Milton Band". After playing with Milton for two years, he joined Albert King's Blues Band. After playing with Albert, he returned to the local scene in Chicago and began to play with many blues bands in the area too numerous to mention. But, it was his association with the late Johnny Christian that really changed things for him. "Big James" says, "Little Milton gave me my start, but Johnny really turned me loose. He was such a great singer and a major influence on me that I will always be grateful to him.

In 1996,"Big James" joined the Buddy Guy's Blues Band. He performed all over the world with the master bluesman, with the highlight being the "House of Blues Barnburner Tour" and a performance on the "Tonight Show" featuring Jay Leno. Also in 1996, Big James rocked the main stage of the Chicago Blues Festival.

Big James has also been active in the recording studio having recorded several albums with Johnny Christian, Lee "Shot" Williams, John Primer, L.V. Banks, Vance Kelly and on Chico Banks first solo project entitled "Candy Lickin' Man", on Evidence records. "Big James" is featured on lead vocals and trombone on a sizzling arrangement of Magic Sam's "All of Your Love."

This is Big James' third recording on the independent blues label Jamot Music. The first entitled "Funkin' Blues" received rave reviews from musicians, critics and the general public from all around the globe. The second release entitled "If It Wasn't 4 Da Blues" has proven to follow suit! This third installment should be the one to take this young blues man into the new millenium. Bill Johnson began playing the guitar when he was 9 years old. Records by Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton, were his early influences, but Bill remembers: "Chuck Berry was the one that did it for me. Chuck made me want to play guitar".

Bill became a working musician early and spent most of his teens making music. He began to study the likes of B.B. King, Elmore James, and T-Bone Walker: " These guys knocked me out. I was immediately hooked on their rhythm and phrasing". During the 90's Bill Johnson played in the Sidewalk Blues Band with world famous slide guitarist Doug Cox, before forming his very own The Bill Johnson Blues Band in 1993. Early engagements those years included opening for Otis Rush, Delbert McClinton. In 1996, and again in 2009, Bill played with Grammy-award winning Donald Ray Johnson and was featured prominently on his recordings. Bill has continued his education with stints as sideman to the likes of Hubert Sumlin, Son Seals, Cash McCall.

In 2006 Bill was nominated for a Maple Blues Award by the Toronto Blues Society for his CD Live, confirming his stature as one of the countries top performers. In 2007 he released the Work Songs CD surprising everyone with his talents playing solo acoustic blues guitar. Now in 2010 Bill's breakout cd is here. "Still Blue" is a masterwork of the blues exemplifying his different abilities as a song writer, singer, and probably to most versatile and amazing guitarist of the modern blues genre. Bill Johnson has spent a lifetime immersing himself in the Blues.

Suzie Vinnick - Me 'N' Mabel - 2011

Given her strong reputation within the Canadian blues scene (she has won six Maple Blues Awards), it's surprising to learn that this is Vinnick's first strictly blues solo album. On acclaimed releases like 2008's Happy Here, Vinnick explored folk and roots terrain, but this isn't anything but the blues. The "Mabel" of the title is her beloved acoustic guitar, and it's the primary instrument. Cameos are taken by Rick Fines (he and Vinnick have recorded as a duo), Roly Platt, Chris Whiteley and Tony Diteodoro, but this is basically a true voice-and-guitar solo album. Vinnick has an expressive, versatile voice (Bonnie Raitt is an apt reference point) to match her fluent playing, while her five originals showcase her compositional skill. She has some notable Canadian co-writers here, including Dan Kershaw, Rita Chiarelli (their "Get Some" is a highlight) and David Leask. The covers include Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Hoyt Axton and Percy Mayfield tunes, showing she's a woman of fine taste. Vinnick has reportedly played many of these songs solo over the years, and it shows in the recording's relaxed vibe. You can expect the blues crowd to warmly embrace this stripped-down, convincing work.
